Winter Festival in Ladakh

Where Snow Meets Spirit — Celebrate the Soul of the Himalayas

As snow veils the mountains and rivers freeze into quiet poetry, Ladakh steps into its most sacred season — winter. And while the world may fall silent, Ladakh bursts into celebration with a series of deeply rooted cultural festivals that light up the coldest months with fire, color, faith, and joy.

From December to March, Ladakh’s monasteries and villages host ancient winter festivals — each one a unique expression of the region’s Buddhist spirituality, community resilience, and vibrant folklore.

Ladakh’s Signature Winter Festivals

🎉 Ladakhi Losar (December)

Marking the Ladakhi New Year, Losar is the oldest and most symbolic festival of the region. Villages come alive with ritual dances, fire offerings, family feasts, and traditional brewing. Homes are decorated with barley and prayer flags, and monasteries perform pujas to cleanse the past year’s negativities.

  • 📍 Celebrated across villages like Chushot, Stok, Sakti, and Nubra — each with its own charm.
  • 🧧 A great time to experience local hospitality and age-old customs.

🕺 Spituk Gustor (January)

Held at Spituk Monastery, this two-day celebration features Cham masked dances that depict the triumph of virtue. It ends with the dramatic ceremonial burning of the effigy of evil, symbolizing purification and peace.

🔮 Matho Nagrang (February)

A mystical festival at Matho Monastery, where two monks become oracles through intense meditation and isolation, offering prophecies for the year. Accompanied by vivid masks, oracular trance, and sacred dance rituals.

🌌 Dosmochey (February)

Known as the “Festival of the Scapegoat”, Dosmochey is a community prayer festival to ward off evil and misfortune. Held at Leh Palace and Likir Monastery, it blends public participation with monastic performances.

👑 Stok Guru Tsechu (March)

This unique festival at Stok Village features oracle monks from the local community, prepared in secret. It’s spiritual, communal, and a rare glimpse into the intuitive side of Ladakhi Buddhism.
